What will you study?

Biology is the study of the natural world. The A Level course includes the study of large mammals like ourselves down to our very own microscopic DNA. We focus on understanding how animals and other organisms function, how we evolved and the things that can make us sick or improve our health. We look at the natural environment, the cycles which occur there, how humans can interact with habitats in a sustainable way and the importance of conservation. Through practical work you will see what different organs look like internally, how fish breathe and the antimicrobial properties of different plants to name a few.

Biology helps you to build up research, problem solving, organisation and analytical skills. You will have opportunities to work as part of a group which will help you build your team work and communication skills too. Biology has a large practical element which will build up your lab skills.

Future Pathways

Biology is a key subject for lots of STEM careers, particularly in healthcare,  medicine and jobs involving plants or animals. Biology is a good stepping stone for subjects such as nursing, dentistry, forensic science, psychology, physiotherapy, botany, environmental science, zoology, geology, oceanography, pharmaceuticals, energy, teaching, science writing, genetics and research.
