Sixth Form Bursary

The 16 to 19 Bursary Fund provides financial support to help students overcome specific barriers to participation so they can remain in education.

1. A vulnerable bursary of up to £1,200 a year for young people in one of the defined vulnerable groups (see policy for full definition).

2. Discretionary bursaries which institutions award to meet individual needs, for example, help with the cost of transport, meals, books and equipment.

To be eligible for the discretionary bursary, students must be facing financial barriers to participation and need help to stay in education. As the discretionary bursary is targeted at students who most need financial help, V6 will use household income to help establish the amount of support awarded to a student. This together with other factors, such as, distance to travel from the school, the number of dependent children in the household or whether the young person has additional responsibilities that may mean they need extra help, for example, they are a young carer or a parent.

The available funds are limited and the school must target funds to the students with the greatest needs. Eligibility cannot therefore guarantee an award.

There are three points each year when applications for the bursary are considered: at the end of September, after Christmas and Easter time. Year 13/14 students must reapply for the bursary, it cannot be carried over from the previous year.
